Impressive Highgate frustrate Sporting at Brancourt
CLARENDON PARK, Clarendon — Debutants Highgate United continue to hold their own early on in the National Premier League following an absorbing goalless draw against inform Sporting Central Academy at Brancourt on Sunday.
Both sides thrilled the crowd with end-to-end action in the first 45 minutes, but just could not find the go-ahead goals their enterprise deserved.
Highgate were commanding after the break, closing down Sporting Central’s dangerman Lesly St Fleur, while continuing to ask the relevant questions in attack, but were again handicapped by Romeo Parkes’ poor form in front of goal.
Sporting also had their share of goal-mouth action, but were off-colour for the most part, and the 90th-minute ejection of right-back Gregory Lewis for dangerous foul play summed up their frustrating afternoon.
Lewis’ ill-timed red-card, coupled with an injury to captain Marlon Allen will no doubt leave the Sporting Central coaching staff with a feeling of disappointment, especially since they failed to get the three points they craved.
The result was, nonetheless, good enough to keep Vassell Reynolds’ side in the top-three, as they extended their unbeaten streak to four games.
Highgate, in the meantime, continued to defy the tag of a promoted team with some constructive football that will no doubt prove fruitful at some point in the season once they are able to put away the chances they create.
Braxton Hyre’s St Mary outfit are now unbeaten in four games, with a respectable six points from five outings — their only defeat of the season coming against Waterhouse on opening day.
