Ja struggle in Pan-Am basketball
JAMAICA flopped in their first two Women’s preliminary Group B basketball matches at the 16th Pan-American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
In the matches being played at the CODE Alcade Sports Complex, Jamaica crashed, 116-34, to Brazil yesterday and collapsed, 83-26, against Colombia on Friday night.
Erica de Souza, standing 6 foot, 5 inches, notched a game-high 22 points and added 15 rebounds for the Brazilians, who led in all quarters, 25-2, 52-11, 82-22, and outscored Jamaica, 24-10, in the last segment.
Simone Jackson led the way for Jamaica with 13 points, while Shereel Brown chipped in with seven points and seven rebounds.
In Friday night’s match, the 6 foot, 5 inches Narlyn Mosquera, who spearheaded the Colombian attack, scored a game-high 21 points. All but three of her points came from the field.
Shereel Brown top-scored with 10 points for Jamaica, who trailed the whole match and slipped up during the second quarter from which they never recovered.
Jamaica will play Canada this afternoon at 5:30.
Brazil and Colombia are joint leaders in Group B with four points, having won both their matches.
Meanwhile, tonight at 7:00, middleweight (75kg) boxer Reece Shagourie will take on Venezuelan Juan Rodriguez in the quarter-final round.
The highly anticipated athletics programme will get underway for Jamaica tomorrow at 1:00 pm with Maurice Smith and Claston Bernard taking part in the decathlon.
The first medal event for Jamaica will begin at 2:25 pm with national champion Natalie Grant going up against 13 other competitors in women’s hammer throw final.
