J’cans ousted early from US badminton event
JAMAICANS Charles Pyne, Gareth Henry, and Samuel Ricketts crashed out of the Bill Graham Miami Badminton International at Shula’s Athletic Club, Miami Lakes in Florida on Wednesday night after getting byes into the second round.
Pyne, ranked 131 in the world, lasted 30 minutes on court against Sri Lankan Niluka Karunaratne, who took out the Jamaican 21-17, 21-14.
Karunaratne, ranked 113 in the world, enjoyed an excellent month against Jamaicans as he knocked Henry out of the semifinal of the Puerto Rico International last week winning 21-11, 21-14.
Pyne has played 27 singles matches this year, winning 15 and losing 12.
Meanwhile Henry, who grabbed 2,800 points at the Puerto Rico International to boast a career-best world ranking of 162, a jump of 48 places, had no answer for Italian Daniel Messersi.
Messeri, with a world ranking of 347, upset Henry 22-20, 16-21, 21-14 in the 45-minute encounter.
The 20-year-old Henry has won 14 and lost 10 singles match this year, with last week’s tournament being his best so far.
Ricketts, in his first tournament as a senior, lost 21-5, 21-10 to Surinamese Virgil Soeroredjo, ranked 272 in the world.
Pyne and Henry are trying to earn enough points to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics, which for the first time will have a group and knockout stage in badminton.
Countries can enter a total of three players in the singles and two pairs in the doubles, but places allocated are based on the Badminton World Federation rankings list on May 3, 2012.
Thirty six of some 60 players have unofficially qualified for next year’s Olympics.
Nigella Saunders is the only Jamaican badminton player to have competed at the Olympic Games which she did in Athens 2004, losing to Mia Audina of The Netherlands 11-4, 11-1 in the first round.
