Rush on for End-of-Round berths
FIVE teams will enter today’s final set of second round matches with a chance of making the Red Stripe Premier League second End-of-Round Final.
Leaders Portmore are in pole position to grab one of the two available spots, and while Montego Bay and Humble Lion look the next best to take the other, Waterhouse and Arnett Gardens are still in the hunt and will be looking to capitalise on any mishaps by the front three.
In the feature encounters, Humble Lion travel to Drewsland to face Waterhouse in a 6:00 pm game, while Montego Bay host Arnett Gardens at Catherine Hall Complex at the same time.
Meanwhile, Portmore entertain Village at Ferdie Neita Park at 7:00 pm; Harbour View take on Sporting Central at Harbour View, also at 7:00; Tivoli face Reno FC at Edward Seaga Complex at 5:00, and Boys’ Town play Highgate at Collie Smith Complex at 3:00.
Portmore lead the round with 20 points, two more than Montego Bay and Humble Lion, followed by Waterhouse with 17 and Arnett, 16.
With second (Montego Bay) against fifth (Arnett) and third (Waterhouse) against fourth (Humble Lion), Portmore could seal their berth in succesive End-of-Round appearances even if they fail to win.
To deny Portmore a place in the bonus final, both Montego Bay and Humble Lion must win and hope the St Catherine side fails to take full points from its match.
Waterhouse will have a chance if Portmore draw and they win, but they will have to win by four clear goals to oust the league leaders..
Of the five teams, Arnett are te most unlikely to make the final. The Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis-coached team will have to beat MoBay by five goals and hope the game between Humble Lion and Waterhouse ends in a draw.
Portmore have tasted victory just once in their last four matches, but playing bottom-of-the-table Village at home, coach Calvin Lewis expects to reap maximum points and book their berth in the second round showpiece.
However, despite languishing at the foot of the standings, Village have turned in some good performance at times — like their 0-0 draw with Harbour View in their previous encounter — and can never be underestimated, despite their poor season overall.
MoBay, under Brazilian coach Neidor Dos Santos, have remained unbeaten this round and a finals berth would be a justified end to the round for the St James club.
However, they will go up against one of their parish’s football idols in Davis, the former Jamaica international who helped rebuild Arnett by injecting a dose of youth, of which Fabian Reid has shone the brightest with goals against Harbour View and Portmore, in his last two outings.
But despite picking up points when they least expected, Arnett will have their work cut out against an in-form side that defeated them 3-1 in their last meeting.
Santos is also confident his players will get the job done playing at home this afternoon.
At Drewsland, Humble Lion could make their first ever incentive final with victory over Waterhouse, and if MoBay fail to win against Arnett.
The Lenworth Hyde-coached team on Sunday rebounded from a two-game losing streak with victory over Boys’ Town.
But Hyde said he will not be pressuring his players to make the final and hopes they go out and enjoy the match.
“I want the players to go out and enjoy the game and anything that happens, happens,” he said.
His counterpart Donovan Duckie believes form and tactics will go out the window when the teams collide this evening.
“It’s a similar situation like when we met in the first round, we wanted to win down there but we drew… so again, it’s going to be a tough one… as the coaches know each other well, so it will come down to the players and who wants it more,” he said.
However, Duckie believes home advantage is on their side and hopes to make the most of their ’12th man’.
“We have lost home games, while Humble Lion have the best record on the road, but we have a better form at home, and this will be a factor…,” he stated.
In the other games, Tivoli will look to continue their resurgence and go for their fourth successive win against Reno, who are at the bottom of the table.
Boys’ Town should also rebound from their defeat to Humble Lion when they host Highgate, while the game between the inconsistent Harbour View and Sporting Central could go either way.
