Legends Of Ska for Jamaica 50
LEGENDS Of Ska: Welcome To The House Of Joy, a film on the sights and sounds of Jamaica during the early 1960s, is to be released during 50th Anniversary of Independence celebrations.
One of the film’s principals, Brad ‘General Moses’ Klein, said the movie is currently in post production.
“The Legends of Ska film is progressing very nicely. To use a football analogy, we are approaching the ‘Red Zone’ and the film will be completed this year during Jamaica’s 50th anniversary celebrations,” said Klein, who resides in Toronto, Canada.
The film features the late legendary toaster/selector Winston ‘King Stitt’ Sparks. Stitt was recently laid to rest on Saturday, February 25.
“Mr Winston Sparks (aka King Stitt) was a true pioneer on the turntable and microphone during the pre-ska days, while always being a loyal friend and colleague of his boss, Sir Coxson Dodd of Studio One,” Klein posted on his website.
The soundtrack of the movie features King Stitt at the turntable during night one of the Legends of Ska concerts at the Palais Royale Ballroom in Toronto, Canada, will also be released. The concerts took place on July 12 and 13, 2002.
The vintage Jamaican singers performing at the concerts included Prince Buster, Derrick Morgan, Stranger Cole, Patsy Todd, Doreen Schaffer, Alton Ellis, and Derrick Harriott.
“Stitchie did a wonderful job toasting both nights of the Legends of Ska concerts in Toronto. He will forever be missed, but never forgotten,” Klein noted.
A precursor to rocksteady and reggae, ska is a Jamaican music that originated in the 1950s. It is a mix of jazz, rhythm and blues, and many other styles.
