Ja strike back to limit CCC after batting slump
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Jamaica hit back to reduce Combined Campuses and Colleges to 46 for three after being dismissed for 200 in their first innings on the opening day of their seventh and final round regional first-class match at the 3Ws Oval here yesterday.
On a day of fluctuating fortunes, runaway leaders Jamaica, no doubt using the match as a warm-up for the semi-finals next weekend as they seek a fifth straight title, suffered a middle-order collapse after reaching 97 for two on winning the toss.
They slipped to 116 for six at one stage before rallying.
All-rounder David Bernard topscored with 40. Batting at number six, he was at the crease for 72 minutes, faced 58 balls and struck six fours and one six before becoming one of four catches for wicketkeeper Chadwick Walton, off fast bowler Jason Holder.
Meanwhile, Barbados captain Kirk Edwards fell agonisingly short of his fifth first-class century as his side got the better of the exchanges on the opening day of their match against Windward Islands in Grenada.
The right-hander was tragically run out for 99, but his knock helped Barbados to 192 all out, after they won the toss and batted at the National Stadium.
At the close, Barbados had hit back strongly to reduce the home side to 65 for four with seamer Javon Searles taking all wickets to fall for 22 runs.
Trinidad and Tobago made a huge stride towards the semi-finals, claiming first innings points over Leeward Islands at Warner Park yesterday.
Left-arm spinner Kavesh Kantasingh and off-spinner Aneil Kanhai combined to take the bulk of the wickets as the Leewards, opting to bat first, were dismissed for 81.
At the close, T&T were 172 for nine, already a lead of 91 on first innings.
