Win propels Cavalier to one point away from title
DEFENDING champion Cavalier inched closer to their third successive KSAFA Super League title after scoring a 3-1 win over Constant Spring in Saturday’s round of matches at the ‘Spring’ Complex.
Fabian Nethersole (ninth & 36th) netted a brace and Shane Franklin (76th) the other for the league leaders, who now need one point from three games to be crowned KSAFA Super League champion for 2012.
Jeffrey Henry scored Constant Spring’s consolation in the 72nd minute.
Meanwhile, Rae Town are all but out of the title chase after they battled to a 2-2 draw with bottom-of-the-table Duhaney Park at Breezy Castle.
Rae Town have now fallen from seven to nine points adrift of the frontrunners, with three games to go.
So Rae Town will now need Cavalier to lose all their three remaining games, while they must win theirs if they have any hopes of lifting the Super League trophy this season.
In other games, UWI stopped August Town 2-0, Santos turned back Mountain View 3-0 and Olympic defeated Greenwich Town 2-1.
The day’s other game between Barbican and Rockfort was not played because of a waterlogged field.
At Constant Spring, Nethersole fired visiting Cavalier ahead after just nine minutes and added a second nine minutes before the break.
However, the diminutive striker was stretchered off minutes before the halftime break after picking up an injury to the rib, following an senseless challenge from a Constant Spring player.
And although Franklin pulled a goal back for the hosts in the 72nd minute, Henry scored again for Cavalier four minutes later to put the game out of Constant Spring’s reach.
At Breezy Castle, a last-minute equaliser by Jermaine Fletcher earned Rae Town their draw with Duhaney Park.
The home team went ahead courtesy of an own goal by Trevor Thorpe in the 31st minute, but second-half goals from Michael Tulloch and Leonard Gooden put the visitors in front, but Fletcher’s last-gasp equaliser earned Rae Town a point.
At UWI Bowl, Shamori Granville (63rd & 88th) scored twice as the host turned back August Town, while at Bell/Chung Oval, a hat-trick from Leon Gordon saw Santos to a 3-0 victory over Mountain View.
At Duhaney Park field, goals from Marcus Morris and Daron Holness helped Olympic Gardens past Greenwich Town, for whom David Stultz scored.
In the Major League, Allman/Woodford closed the gap on Police National from six to three points after Greg Whitter’s 63rd-minute goal carried the former to a 1-0 win over their arch-rival at Heroes Circle.
In other results, Shortwood defeated Bull Bay 5-0, Brown’s Town beat Cooreville 3-0, while Maxfield were 4-1 winners against Pembroke Hall.
The other matches between Meadforest and Swallowfield and Molynes versus Real Mona were not played because of an unprepared and a waterlogged field, respectively.
Police sit atop the standings on 46 points, with Allman/Woodford following closely on 43, Shortwood stayed third with their win on 38 points, with Maxfield fourth on 33 points.
