Even Gleaner readers excited about ‘Crimes that rocked…’
Readers continue to express delight over the Observer’s ‘Crimes that rocked the nation’ series written by veteran journalist Sybil Hibbert, with support from her husband, retired ACP Isadore Hibbert. Here are some more of their comments:
* Dear Sybil, I see that your Mary Lynch story has excited not only Observer readers but also the Gleaner and Mary Lynch herself! They carried a big story based on an interview of a totally unrepentant Mary Lynch this morning (last Sunday). It did not leave me with a good impression of her.

* Dear Sybil, Mrs Mary Lynch has left us with more questions than answers. It is not a matter of who killed him but how he was killed. She did admit killing him. My thoughts are: Why did she remain with Lynch? She was neither emotionally nor economically dependent on him, and according to her she was a highly educated woman. When she met him she was not particularly impressed. They didn’t have any children. Why didn’t she leave him at the first sign of this abuse instead of tolerating it for years? Does she have any record of him abusing her before his death? Did she present any evidence at trial that she told anybody, and did any of these people testify on her behalf? I don’t think Mr Lynch even knew that he died (interpret that as the top journalist you are)…I took nearly half-an-hour to read your article, I enjoyed it so much. I would read a paragraph or two (not wanting it to finish) and return to continue it. One thing though, was Lensley Wolfe chief justice then? Seems that he came along at a later time. Wouldn’t it have been Smith? It would be interesting to see if your series has caused a jump in circulation for the Observer on Sundays. — Lloyd, lloyd.rssll@gmail.com
* Hello, Mrs Hibbert, I’ve found this murder drama to be very interesting. It reminds me of a murder which took place in Spanish Town in 1969 one Friday night. This was the murder of Dr John Morgan at his house located at Manchester Street. I do not know if you can recall this incident, but if you do, I would very much be able to supply you with inside information leading up to this murder. Dr Morgan’s death was organised by a man who paid another man from Central Village to pose as a patient in his surgery before killing the doctor. The murder took place about 7:45 that Friday evening. I took the meat which I had picked up for Doctor at the market and brought it to him about 7:15. At that time the killer was waiting like a patient. After accepting the meat, Doctor asked me to have a seat, saying he wanted to speak to me, but I said I’d be back when the patients had gone. It was just a few minutes later a crowd was heading towards Doctor’s house, shouting, “Lord, them kill poor Dr Morgan!” It’s a very interesting story and I would very much love to supply you with any information you might require in order to publish this murder drama. I was like Doctor’s son, my family was very close to him. I knew the organiser of the murder. I knew doctor’s wife very well. The man who ordered the hit (also now deceased) got 10 years in prison. The killer hanged himself in prison after getting life imprisonment. Please respond to me in regards to this drama. There’s a lot more. — Elliston McDonald, emcdonald@arcor.de
* Dear Mrs Hibbert, this series is really interesting. The writing is phenomenal! My mother and I agree that it’s like we’re watching a documentary on TV. It’s my new favourite section of the Observer. —jones.nicolette@gmail.com
Dear Mrs Hibbert, I read all the cases in the series thus far and found them to be invaluable. There is so much to learn from those cases. The former ACP clearly is a great investigator. I’m learning so much, I look forward to your next article. — blakesi@yahoo.co.uk
Dear Sybil, I saw your series of articles got some good feedback from the readers. They are asking for more and even requesting specific cases. Thank you. — awynterstorm@msn.com
Dear Sybil, oh wow…thank u…I started reading the one about Mary Lynch and I learnt so, much, thank you. It’s so interesting and riveting I had no idea that is how it actually happened. I have heard so many stories about it…Can’t wait to read the rest. —alvesthegreat@gmail.com
Oh my God, Sybil! This (Mary Lynch) reads like something from a horror movie. Count Dracula, if I may say so. This type of crime is usually committed by men — calculated, cold and ferociously brutal. I could not stop once I started reading your article. Not only was the story itself very gripping but the delivery was so profound and vibrant, that for a moment I forgot the horrors within. I shall comment vigorously on Facebook when the series is completed. — Rashida Wynter rushweed@hotmail.com
