Online readers react to beauty queen’s announcement

The announcement by former Miss Jamaica World and Miss Jamaica Universe Yendi Phillips of her pregnancy on the weekend has generated much discussions among Jamaica Observer readers, with some even questioning why the announcement made the news. Below are some of the comments from Observer online readers:

Kerron B

Now I hope for a drop in the price of bread.

Ahmeman Ah No Shabba

Another child to be born out of wedlock and this makes top story/ breaking news? REALLY?? What kind of message are we sending to our young people here? My goodness!!!!!!

Kevin Williams

Maybe Yendi should have just kept this to herself. As a role model to the young people of Jamaica, especially women, it is unfortunate that she has reduced herself to a mere baby mother.

Bal Ance

Stop judging the womb that bears the fruit, instead wish both mother and father and child a good healthy life. I pray that instead of commenting negatively, we collectively fix this dirty society in time for our unborn kids to live decent lives. Getting rid of dancehall doesn’t mean things would have changed. Many of you don’t listen dancehall but are at Shaggy’s benefit concert yearly to rub shoulders with power brokers.

SuperDuper XX

Congrats to Yendi and Daniel. The gift of new life is always a blessing!!

Beresford Davidson

So? Big deal! Tell her to go get married.

Jakan 2011

Really? Dancehall? Ah well.

Gary Smith

Where are the women’s and children’s advocates now.

Peter Lawrence

I’m not a dancehall fan (except occassionaly when I play a random disk to get” rhythmically lewd”) so I’ve never heard of McGregor. Not my business, but since it’s out there in the public domain, by Yendi herself, can we hear that a dancehall man is serious about committed family life? Baby Madda for dancehall massive are dime a dozen. Some boast of having 15 maddaz. I wouldn’t care, but I bet my taxes will have to support some of these who get in trouble. Wish Yendi the best.

Wayne Henry

I thought she was dating Asafa powell. Wasn’t there a report of that and they took pictures together? Someone please give me some clarification.

Vincent Vincent

Congratulations Yendi! You seem to be good at what you do and I’m sure as a mother you will be no less of a person. I am sure there are a lot of wellwishers out there who will be willing to share some tips with you as you go along. I became a father at 26 and it changed my life completely. My son was born out of wedlock and I ended up marrying his mom and we are one loving family. Don’t allow detractors to get you down…

Cathy Wong

Sad…very sad. I really thought that Yendi was a cut above the rest. I have counted, so far, eight of these celebs consisting of Miss Jamaica’s and radio and TV personalities who have had children and not married, some even for married men. Sad, very sad…I feel it for our young girls…who is a role model?

Levar Gordon

Who the hell are you, Cathy Wong and all the other self-righteous pr..ks? I can imagine uno life is soo messed up. Uno rude! Congrats Yendi. If she got pregnant for a Matalon or Issa, I bet there wouldn’t be any “shame” .

Sean H

This private business becomes newsworthy because?

Wayne Prawl

Wow, these comments are amazing. Please go to the home page and look at the date. It’s 2012. No longer do women have to get married to validate themselves. Having a baby does not take away her presence, beauty or intelligence. All these hypocrites on here make me sick to my stomach. Jamaicans and their selective conservatism. Ha! If only this website could show the faces and lives of these people, contradictions would blind us. #proud out of wedlock baby. Do us a favour and go to church and leave us.

Care Beee

Congrats Yendi! I’m sure your baby will be loved and well taken care of given the fact that you are a strong woman who strives to do the best in all that you do. You continue to resonate the confidence, bravery and joy that many women (incl myself) need to emulate!
