Jamaica must go green
Dear Editor,
How can any government that is serious about reducing the cost of energy charge GCT on LED bulbs and not on CFL (fluorescent) fixtures?
The LED bulb is the future and will reduce lighting costs by over 30 per cent. The bulb is already expensive for the average person, so when GCT is applied it makes the price unreachable for most people. This will keep them buying CFL tubes that are harmful to the environment, because once they are thrown away the mercury will pollute Jamaica’s waters in a very short time.
If the Government of Jamaica is serious about reducing energy costs and helping the environment, it must remove GCT from LED bulbs and other forms of alternative energy products. LED bulbs last four times longer, do not get hot, and will save foreign exchange on fuel costs.
Companies have invested a lot of time and money in setting up alternative energy businesses and have started to educate the public. We are doing our part. Please do yours, Mr Minister, and get with the times.
Jamaica must go green.
