My music has evolved — Jah9

New work to encourage women walking in their femininity

Reggae singer Jah9 will readily admit her artistic evolution. In fact, the artiste, who is now a mother, says motherhood has completely shifted her perspective.

“I just had my first son and that experience is just indescribable. I mean, no matter how much you prepare for it, you cannot be fully prepared, and I’m just giving thanks for the opportunity to be chosen by this little boy. He is the centre of my world now and he has shifted my priorities, shifted my focus and given me great clarity, and I give thanks for him. He is my teacher right now,” she told the Jamaica Observer in a recent interview.

The artiste indicated that she believes she has matured in many ways and it will be evident in her upcoming work.

The Note To Self’ singer revealed that she has come to a point in her life at which she is embracing her femininity.

“I will be showing more of my softer, feminine side. I am trying to represent that vibration now, and it’s being well received so far in the songs I have already released. Some might not be used to it, but once they hear it enough they will feel and understand it,” she said. “Songs like Open Heart and Match already show me in that soft space and the songs to be released some time in the summer will steadily push the music forward.”

According to Jah9, the decision to focus on her softer side came through the realization that women, especially in today’s society, need to be reminded that it’s okay to be soft. She expressed that with many women taking on so many responsibilities, many have become disconnected with their true purpose.

“I feel like the new revolution needs to be love and, especially as a woman, particularly now, the stance, the duties that a lot of women are taking on…there is a dangerous thing that’s happening. We have to remind women about the power of softness and of walking in their feminine energy,” she said. “We have to remember that, although we’ve been faced with a lot these days that causes us to be more rigid and stern, it’s okay to be woman. I think some of us as artistes need to stand in that gap and sing songs of love and passion and sensuality.”

Jah9 spoke to the message in the music and that fans can expect to be impacted positively by her tracks.

“My songs aren’t ‘jump up, jump up’, they are ‘stand and listen’, and when I am singing and speaking to my people, I know they’re hearing it and feeling it, and my music is written with them in mind,” she continued. “Time is evolving, my whole message is evolving, and I am looking forward to sharing the new music. We had some songs that we dropped late last year and I just want the people to continue listening and supporting. Feed on the messages, feel enriched and know that you are loved and appreciated.”
