Dirt sprint next Sunday
JAMAICA’S top dirt sprinters will be pulling out all the stops come Sunday, June 17 at the Thetford Great House in Church Pen, St Catherine.
The event, dubbed Dirt Masters, is the fourth round in the Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club’s National Sprint Championship. Action starts at 11:00 am.
Event organiser Kirk Scott said motorsports fans can expect to see a toss up in the popular JA2 class among rivals Jordan Powell, Matthew Gore and Daryl King for the chance win the title of ‘Dirt Master’ and to accumulate points in the race for the championship.
“This is the first official Dirt Masters meet and we want it to make an impact on motorsports fans in Jamaica. We’ve already been receiving a lot of support from people out there who are rallying behind their favourite drivers, so we expect it to go well,” Scott told Auto.
Located on the grounds of a 19th-century great house, the 1,800-metre dirt track features horse shoes, chicanes and straight-aways. Scott said he will be adding an extra 1,000 metres to allow room for the drivers to go as fast as they desire to secure a win.
Racing veteran Keith Saunders is also expected to compete at the event. Driving his rear-wheel-drive Chevrolet Chevette in the JA3 class he said he is ready to put on a show.
“It will be my first time competing on this track so I’m looking forward to it. The only way you can have fun is if you go hard, so I’ll be there going hard and putting on a show. I know the spectators want to see some sliding and some entertaining runs and that’s what I’ll be providing,” said Saunders.
The event will also see entries from female competitors who will have the chance to win a cash prizes for the fastest time. Male competitors will also win a prize for the fastest time regardless of overall point standing.
“We know how expensive it is to maintain these cars, so we wanted to give the drivers more incentive to come out and compete. So we made sure that in addition to receiving a trophy they will also win cash. We have a certain amount set aside for the winners which may increase depending on how many patrons come out to show their support,” said Scott.
Patrons can also look forward to other full throttle displays including dirt bike racing from Irie Motocross, stunts by the Crazy Bikerz crew, and a car show by Magnum Car Sexy.
