LAHORE, Pakistan (CMC) — West Indies Women’s Head Coach Shane Deitz is still confident the regional side can claim one of the two qualifying spots for the Women’s Cricket World Cup, despite their opening loss to Scotland.

The West Indies Women went down by 11 runs to Scotland on Wednesday and now face an uphill battle to qualify for the Women’s World Cup, scheduled to be held in India between September and October.

However, speaking in a post-match interview, while Deitz said he was very disappointed with his team’s performance, he still believed they would rebound in their remaining matches.

West Indies Women play Ireland Women in their second match on Friday at the Gaddafi Stadium.

“It was a pretty poor performance from most players…We really didn’t back ourselves enough and they wanted to win the game more and took it to us.

“It’s not good enough and it can’t happen again,” Deitz said.

“But the beauty of this tournament is that if we win the next four games with a good net run rate it should see us through, so our goal now is the next game.”

Deitz said the West Indies women would come prepared for “a fight” against an Ireland side which he said could not be underestimated.

“Ireland are a good team, so it’s going to be a great contest and we’re going to recover well and come up for a fight and come fight hard next game.

“I think we might actually play better when we’re under pressure and we’re expected to win, like in the [T20] World Cup where we lost the first game and came back really hard when the chips were down,” Deitz said.

“We’ve done it before in the World Cup against the best opposition in the world, so we have to do it again now and every game is a grand final, so we’re going to leave everything on the field and not hold back in any way.”
