Riley grabs another gold at NCAA Champs
ANDREW Riley clinched his second National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Outdoor 110m hurdles title yesterday, adding to his 100m gold Friday to wrap up his collegiate season in sensational style at Drake Stadium in Iowa.
The 23-year-old University of Illinois senior, running into a strong wind (-3.5m/s), won in 13.53 seconds, beating Trinidad & Tobago’s Wayne Davis II of Texas A&M University, 13.60, and American Spencer Adams of Clemson University, 13.73.
On Friday, Riley capped an astonishing season when he became the first Jamaican in 19 years to win that NCAA Division I title.
He triumphed in a photo finish over Auburn University’s Harry Adams and Florida State’s Maurice Mitchell, all three clocking 10.28 seconds.
Rounding the times to a thousandth of a second, Riley won in 10.272, ahead of Americans Adams, 10.274, and Mitchell, 10.277.
In the 100m preliminaries on Wednesday, Riley clocked a personal best 10.02 for second in heat two after Adams, 9.96.
The Calabar past student also gave Illinois their first NCAA 100m champion since 1954 when Willie Williams ran away with the title.
Riley’s quiet wish to run on Jamaica’s star-studded sprint relay team at the London Olympics has come much closer to reality.
Running in lane six, Riley rushed out of the blocks and kept pace with the leaders up to the finish when he out-leaned the field.
Riley’s win marks the 47th national title in Illinois history. With the win, Riley also earned the 10th All-America accolade of his career and is the first three-time NCAA champion at Illinois since 1996 when Marko Koers won the 800m and 1,500m indoor title in 1993 and the 1,500m crown in 1996.
