Case against Hay Webster discontinued
DEVON McDaniel, the losing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) candidate in the 2007 general elections, has discontinued his efforts in the Supreme Court to have Sharon Hay Webster disqualified as MP for the South Central St Catherine seat for which she defeated him.
Yesterday, when the matter came up for hearing, McDaniel told the court that he wished to withdraw his petition against Hay Webster.
The move was expected as Hay Webster, who was a member of the People’s National Party (PNP), lost her seat to former party colleague Denise Daley in the December 2011 general elections.
Both sides had been in dialogue over ending the case ever since Hay Webster crossed the floor and became a member of the then ruling JLP in October, after leaving the PNP in June 2011.
Prior to this, McDaniel had been trying to have Hay Webster disqualified from the House of Representatives on account of her holding United States citizenship at the time of her election in September of 2007.
Hay Webster renounced her US citizenship late last year, which she said she gained at birth.
