Sunshine Girls hunt series sweep
JAMAICA’s senior netballers will seek their first series sweep in almost a decade when they play the world number five-ranked team in Game Three of their Supreme Ventures Sunshine Series at the National Indoor sports Centre (NISC) this evening, starting at 7:30.
The Jamaicans are leading the series 2-0 following 15-point wins in both games so far, 63-48 on Friday and 61-46 on Sunday.
The South Africans put up a stronger challenge to the Sunshine Girls in the second encounter than they did in Friday’s opener and local coach Oberon Pitterson-Nattie was impressed with what she saw from
the visitors.
“Well done to South Africa. I thought they played brilliantly. I thought their defensive strategy really gave us problem,” she said.
As for the Jamaican play, Pitterson-Nattie was pleased with the tenacity shown by her squad.
“I thought we started out really slow, but I have to congratulate them for keeping their composure and even when they were down they took their time netting one by one and as soon as they were in front they really established their lead,” she said.
Pitterson-Nattie, who expressed concern about the team’s defensive tactics in the opener, was a bit perturbed, but said she had
seen improvement.
“We still have a lot of work. I still think we need to be tenacious consistently. We do it and it works for us and then we slack off. We just have to work on the consistency.”
As the teams enter the third game tonight, the head coach is looking to take home the series 3-0.
“We have to win. We have to do whatever it takes. We have to make adjustment and the guys are up for the task and I know they’ll come out and put their best again for us to win,” she said.
Meanwhile, South African team captain Amanda Mynhardt admitted that despite putting up a stiff challenge to the Jamaicans in the first two quarters, they eased up in the second half.
“I think in the third and fourth quarters we let it go. I think they were opportunities on the attack which we didn’t have. I think it’s just about finishing it off which at times we didn’t do,” she said.
The aim tonight will be to narrow that 15-point margin between
the teams.
“I think we have got to just put up a good performance and get as close as we can to the Jamaicans and just make the score less than 12 or 15 goals,” she stated.
