Williams embarks on Olympic quest for Great Britain
MUNRO College’s Delano Williams, who will be seeking a spot on the Great Britain Olympic team at next weekend’s National Trials in Birmingham, says he is ready for one of the biggest challenges of his track and field career.
After winning the 200m at a JAAA All-Comers meet at the National Stadium on Saturday in 21.70 seconds running into a negative 4.8 metres per second head-wind, Williams left the island yesterday for Great Britain to finalise his preparations.
He will be joined by high school coach Neil Harrison a day later and Williams, who is unbeaten over the 100m and 200m this season, told the Jamaica Observer his race on Saturday was “just a blow-out; this was my first race since Penn Relays (in late April) and I just wanted to see where I am”.
His personal best of 20.53 seconds set at the Milo Western Champs in February ranks him at number three on the junior performance list so far and is fourth on the Great Britain list, behind James Alaka (20.45), Christian Malcolm (20.46) and Richard Kilty (20.50).
Williams, who will compete for his native Turks and Caicos Islands at the 14th IAAF World Junior Championship in Barcelona Spain from July 10-15, said he had not kept up with who his likely opponents will be in Birmingham next weekend. He, however, said training has been going well and he thinks running 20.4 or lower should be enough to book his place on the team.
Williams, who has committed to returning to Munro for sixth form, won the Class One sprint double at the Milo Western Champs in February and also at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ Champs a month later before leading Munro to a repeat victory in the Championships of Americas high school boys 4x400m at the Penn Relays.
