RADIO disc jockey Michael ‘Mighty Mike’ Jones was found dead at his home in Ocho Rios, St Ann on Thursday evening. He was 52.

His son Hasani Jones told the Jamaica Observer that he learnt of his father’s death via the social website Twitter.

“After that, my phone started to blow up with calls,” he said.

The younger Jones, a disc jock, said an autopsy will be done to determine the cause of his father’s death.

He, however, vows to keep his father’s legacy alive.

Former Irie FM station manager Clyde McKenzie, described Mighty Mike as a loyal person.

“I knew Mighty Mike before Irie FM, we were friends long before he started there in 1992,” he said.

According to McKenzie, they met while Mighty Mike was a selector at Acropolis nightclub.

“He was a real lover of music. He had a passion for it and he was also knowledgeable; it wasn’t just a job for him,” recalled McKenzie.

He said when Mighty Mike joined the Irie FM staff their friendship grew. Along with fellow disc jockey, Ainsworth ‘Big A’ Higgins, they would attend major events such as Reggae Sunplash and Reggae Sumfest.

He said his fondest memory of Mighty Mike was his exuberant reaction to a show at Acropolis featuring Sanchez and Garnet Silk.

“Why it stands out is that he was not a man to publicly show his emotions, but that night he was really happy,” McKenzie said.

Michael ‘Mighty Mike’ Jones is survived by his mother and son.
