TWELVE-YEAR-OLD Hayley Baugh has indeed put into action these words by Wassily Kandinsky.

She has interpreted art as using scraps of waste paper to create origami pieces and miniatures that are beautiful beyond belief. “I am a beautiful, creative girl who loves art,” the aspiring artist and musician described herself.

A past student of Vaz Preparatory School and a current student of Convent of Mercy Academy (Alpha), Baugh stated that she tapped into her passion in the fourth grade when Nurse Wilson, a nurse at her prep school, introduced her to this beautiful world of creation.

Baugh was already inspired to make things as her sister, Tiffany Christie, pursued art. But Nurse Wilson made this transcend the realm of dreams to reality.

These origami pieces are intricately built to perfection, and as such Baugh stated that she spends one day to build them. The miniatures though, take 20 minutes or more.

“I get frustrated when I don’t get it right,” Baugh told TEENage. When asked to comment on where the patience and dedication come, Baugh shrugged and said that, “I guess when I see something and I really want to do it, I stick to it until it is finished.”

What makes this exceptional is that although this passion is time consuming and grates on her nerves if a mistake is made, when the product is finished, Baugh does not keep it, or more profitably, sell it, but chooses to give it away.

“My mom says it’s a hobby for now,” she smiled. “Besides, I feel great because other people like it, too.”

“Try and don’t give up,” Baugh advised youths her age who may wish to pursue one or all of their passions in life.

TEENage implores pre-TEENs, TEENs and young adolescents to try to follow this advice, although it is easier said than done.
