T&T?s Walcott wins historic gold medal in javelin

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Trinidad’s Keshorn Walcott copped the gold medal in the men’s javelin in London today.

This is the first ever gold medal for a Caribbean athlete in a field event at the Olympics and the first for the western hemisphere in decades.

Walcott age nineteen, the World junior champion, won with a throw of 84.58m beating highly fancied European competitors. Europeans have monopolised the javelin at the Olympics for years.

Walcott was surprised by his accomplishment.

“I’m surprised I even made the final. I just went out there to relax and enjoy it, and it worked for me. It means everything to me. This is what it’s all about. I just train my hardest and try to enjoy every time I come out.”
