BIRMINGHAM, England — Jamaica’s Rosemarie Whyte won her first ever IAAF Diamond League race today when she took the women’s 400m title at the Birmingham Grand Prix at Alexander Stadium as her compatriot Kaliese Spencer was disqualified after winning the 400m hurdles.

Whyte, who was competing for the first time since qualifying for the 400m finals at the recent Olympic Games, and who was a 4x400m bronze medalist, ran a season’s best 50.20 seconds to beat Great Britain’s Olympic silver medalist Christine Ohuruogo – 50.67 seconds, and American Francena McCorory – 51.00 seconds.

Another Jamaican, Shericka Williams, was fourth in 41.44 seconds, two days after running a season best 50.30 seconds in Budapest.

Meanwhile, Spencer, who would have all but secured her second consecutive Diamond League title with a win, and who was first across the line in what would have been a stadium and meet record 53.79 seconds, was disqualified for infringing IAAF rule 168.7a after it was ruled her trail leg did not go over the final hurdle.
