Twenty-seven-year-old Rodolph ‘Rudi’ Austin crashed home his first goal in a Leeds United shirt on Tuesday for the Elland Road outfit to blank Oxford United 3-0 in the second round of the Capital One Cup.

It was an outstanding match for the Jamaican international, who paved the way for Leeds drilling in an Aidy White’s pass in the 26th minute to the bottom right corner of goal.

Austin, who transferred from Norway’s SK Bran for euro 250,000 transfer fee, had earlier signalled his intent in the 12th minute when a right-footed shot from outside the box misses to the left.

Teenager Sam Byram made it 2-0 in the 34th minute from a close-range lob and United sealed the match in the 73rd minute when El-Hadji Diouf delivered a cross from the right for Tom Lees to power a header past Ryan Clarke in the Oxford goal.

Lees’ header came 17 minutes after Austin rattled the crossbar with a thunderous strike from 40 yards out.

Meanwhile, Leeds United manager Neil Warnock has spoken highly of the production of 27-year-old Jamaican, who arrived at Elland Road on July 22. Austin, the former Portmore United man, has so far played five matches, three of them in the English League Championship and others in the Capital One Cup.

“You won’t see two better goals than the two in the first half. Sam will probably never score another goal like that in his career, though Rodolph probably will..,” he said.

A terrace hero, Austin was also described as a “tough-tackling, free-shooting brute of a midfielder… breaking up play at will and bruising his way around the pitch as well as hitting the bar”.

Austin, with 48 caps and three goals for Jamaica, was busy throughout the match taking four shots, two on goal. The Portmore United player also drew three fouls and committed one.

The Jamaiacan will next be in action on Saturday when seventh-placed Leeds host third-placed Blackburn Rovers in a Championship match at 9:00 am Jamaican time.
