Vauxhall devour Red Sharks to take rugby title
VAUXHALL Vultures whipped Duhaney Park Red Sharks, 30-16, to claim the National Club Rugby League Championship title on Saturday at Up Park Camp.
Tiege Jackson, Sandino Hastings, Robert Johnson, Everton Richards, Kemar Grey, and Andrew Fong all secured tries, while Grey added three conversions and a penalty kick.
Vauxhall led 12-8 at the end of the first half, which proved to be hard-fought for the entire 40 minutes.
In the high-pressure second half, Vauxhall sealed their dominance with back-to-back tries in the 60th and 61st minutes.
Duhaney Park tried to pull off a trademark late-game rally, but were plagued by handling errors and muffed countless opportunities.
Vauxhall sealed their fifth national title from six appearances as Duhaney Park fizzled in their sixth of seven showing in the finals.
Director of Rugby, Romeo Monteith raved over the performance of the finalists and the overall standard of the competition.
“There was a lot of talent on display throughout our championship and these two teams were deserving finalists.
“Rugby League as a sport continues to draw massive fan and community interest, so we are pleased with our progress. We have been going five seasons now without a major sponsor and we would love to have that change in 2013, so that these clubs and players can get even better,” he explained.
