MONTEGO BAY, St James — Four of the five men who were taken into custody in connection with the killing of 43-year-old Donovan Hazley last month were pointed out in a recent identification parade.

Hazley’s 18-year-old daughter, who was also severely chopped when their house in the Zion community in Trelawny was firebombed, remains in hospital.

The four are expected to be charged shortly.

“An identification parade was held for the men and four of them were pointed out as persons who participated in the activities, and we expect that in short order they will be charged with the respective offences that led to the death of the gentleman and the injuring of his daughter ,” ACP in charge of the Area One Police Division Devon Watkis disclosed Thursday during a press conference held at the Wexford Hotel in Montego Bay.

He said although the fifth individual was not pointed out during the identification parade, he was not released, as the police believe “that he might be able to assist with further investigations”.

According to ACP Watkis, the five individuals were held within 48 hours of the incident.

The death of Hazley, otherwise known as ‘Abbra’, is suspected to be an act of vigilante justice or revenge in connection with the death of two boys from their community, whose decomposing bodies were fished from the Martha Brae River days before the incident. He was accused of hiding someone whom the residents alleged may have had a hand in the boys’ death.

However, post-mortem results on the bodies have revealed that the boys — Alex Brown, 10, and seven-year-old Javani Brown — died from drowning. The two were not related.

Residents, however, are adamant that they were sodomised, killed, and their bodies dumped into the river.

Meanwhile, ACP Watkis noted that a special unit headed by Acting Superintendent of Police Derrick Champagnie, crime officer for the Area One Police Division, has been assigned to carry out further investigations in the matter.

“We are conducting investigations to determine how and in what circumstances these young persons came to their deaths,” ACP Watkis said.

He noted that the police were awaiting results from a forensic laboratory to make a conclusive determination in the matter.

“If you will recall, I also indicated that there were other aspects that we think we need to pursue, injuries that were noted and indicated. We also, at the time, requested swab samples of specific areas of the bodies to facilitate forensic analyses. These have all been forwarded for those analyses to be pursued,” Watkis said.
