Barbican will go for an unprecedented fifth straight Sherwin Williams Women’s Premier League title when they go up against Waterhouse in the final at Stadium East this afternoon at 4:00 pm.

The Charles Edwards-coached Barbican have been perfect throughout the season, winning the mid-season final, the knockout competition and have won all their league matches to date.

And the veteran coach believes winning the title for a fifth consecutive time will show that Barbican are a cut above the rest when it comes to women’s football in Jamaica.

“The girls are very motivated and eager to go out and play… and I am very happy with what I have seen in training this week,” he said.

The champions defeated Waterhouse twice in the preliminary stages, but Edwards noted that this is a final and he expects his opponents to give a better showing this time round.

“We have looked at them and have analysed them and we will counter them in all aspects of the game,” he said.

Meanwhile, his counter-part Xavier Gilbert, believes his team is the underdogs for this contest, but vowed his charges will give it their best shot as they hope to break the champions’ stranglehold on the trophy.

Gilbert said in the two games they’ve met this season they were competitive for most parts, but pointed that some weaknesses let them down.

“We are not as strong as we would like, but we will try to take advantage of their weak points… and we have to try not to expose ourselves. But we will give it our best,” he said.

Barbican will look to players like the competition’s leading scorer Jody-Ann McGregor, captain Alicia James, Kenesha Reid, Trudian Mills, Janine Dennis and Phillisia Lewis, while Waterhouse’s hopes rest on players like Omolyn Davis, Tasheka Small, Davia Morrison, Shanise Steele, Khedene Salmon and Kimeisha Wilmot.
