C2W Music signs with German publisher
Intellectual property company Caribbean 2 World (C2W) has secured a three-year partnership with German-based publisher BMG Chrysalis.
The deal makes the Caribbean company a sub-publisher for BMG’s its catalogues, songs and songwriters.
C2W will collect 100 per cent of BMG’s royalties from all potential revenue streams, for which it will be paid a 10 per cent fee.
What’s more, the company will negotiate and close deals with any entity wanting to use any songs that belong to BMG.
“It’s a lucrative deal,” said Ivan Berry, the chief executive officer of C2W. He expects the company’s financial gains to be reflected in its bottom line by as early as the second quarter of next year.
“Our royalties and our potential to maximise our catalogues will grow tenfold,” he said.
C2W, which was listed on the Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE) Junior Market earlier this year, earns through performance royalties, from music played via media outlets; mechanical royalties, from the sale of compact discs and digital units; and synchronisation royalties, from music used in or adapted for movies and television advertisements.
The business model is aimed at generating sustainable income through the ownership of Caribbean intellectual property, which is very valuable on the international market, he said.
Songwriters will benefit from the partnership. He added: “They will be marketed, and their royalties will be collected. There is also the potential to maximise a synergy between their songwriters and ours,” Berry said about C2W’s new partnership.
The digital download of C2W’s song We Want Drinkz is now available worldwide on iTunes and on digital downloading sites like Amazon, C2W said. The track is currently priced at US$0.99. It was written by King Bubba FM, Lil Rick and Corey Forde. The song is signed to Young American Recording, a record label owned by Max Grousse, senior vice-president of Island/Def Jam.
But Berry said it was difficult to calculate how the song will contribute to C2W’s revenues.
“Royalties don’t work as definitive as cents per play,” he said. Adding that it varies all around the world.
He hopes that millions of people will play the Tap Tap Revenge. “When purchases are made via iTunes, the company will generate income from sales and also from streaming the song, Berry said.
It is much too early to say how many purchases have been made since the song was made available on iTunes. “Accounting statements via iTunes and the record label are quarterly, so it’s much too early to know the sales figures,” Berry said.
A basketball version of the song, We Want Dunks has been created. It was specifically made for the Miami Heat and the Los Angeles Clippers. This version will be played in upcoming games.
“Both iTunes and the game Tap Tap Revenge are marketing and awareness campaigns to drive traffic towards the sale of the song for digital download,” Berry said.
Jennifer Hudson has indicated that she liked two of the songs that were written at C2W’s song writing camp, Berry said.
“If she does, it will be major impact for us and could prove to be financially rewarding to the company and our shareholders,” he further stated.
The company has generated very little revenue so far and Berry said he hopes to start seeing royalties in the second quarter of 2013 from performance income and other streams.
The company gained access to its initial public offering funding in June of this year. It had raised $129 million.
