Raheem Sterling questioned by police over alleged assault – report
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Reports have been circulating in the British press that Jamaican born, Liverpool winger, Raheem Sterling has been interviewed by police over an alleged attack on a woman.
According to The Guardian, 17-year-old Sterling, who lives in a southern Liverpool suberb community called Woolton, was questioned by detectives under caution.
The teenager made light of the issue on Twitter Monday.
Sterling, who was born in Kingston, made his England debut last week against Sweden.
He was signed by Rafael Benítez in February 2010 from Queen’s Park Rangers for a reported initial fee of £600,000.
According to the British media report, a spokeswoman said: “Merseyside Police can confirm that a 17-year-old male from the Woolton area was interviewed under caution, following a report of an assault on Friday 2 November.
“A 27-year-old woman received slight injuries during the incident in the Liverpool 8 [Toxteth] area. At this time, the investigation is ongoing and no formal action has been taken.”
Sterling has not been arrested and Merseyside police said investigations were continuing.
Sterling’s impressive form since making his Liverpool debut eight months ago earned him an England call-up from Roy Hodgson, making him the youngest international in Liverpool’s history.
