Thunder blast Knights in western basketball
MONTEGO BAY, St James — William Knibb Thunder turned in an inspired second half performance at the Montego Bay Cricket Club on Tuesday evening to hand Montego Bay Cricket Club Knights their first loss of the Hi-lyte Insport Western Basketball Association’s Men’s Basketball Championships season 67-55.
The Trelawny club outscored Knights 42-27 over the last two quarters to snap their seven-game win streak and moved up to fourth place in the points table.
Avalanche will host Rockybar Ballers at the Cricket Club courts this evening starting at 6:30.
Despite the loss, Knights lead the tables with 15 points with Trelawny Tornadoes and Rockybar Ballers next on 11 points each and Thunder on 10 points, one more than Inner-city Avalanche and Coral Gardens Raptors.
Knights trailed 9-14 after the first quarter, but rallied to lead 28-25 at half-time.
Thunders, however, turned up the tempo in the second half and led 56-35 at the end of the third quarter and while Knights managed to cut the deficit to eight points mid-way the fourth quarter, Thunder were too strong down the stretch and ran away with the game.
Shavaughn Reid scored 24 points to lead Thunder and got eight rebounds and two blocked shots, Alwayne Smith scored 12 points, while Orville Ennis scored 12 points and had 11 rebounds.
Travis Anglin, who battled foul trouble in the second half, was the top-scorer for Knights with 11 points and seven rebounds, Jamoi Richards had 10 points and Omroy Kerr eight points.
