Papi Chulo’s Smoky Flavours of Mexico

Hola, food lovers! If you’re craving a dining experience that ignites your taste buds on a whirlwind adventure through the zesty, smoky flavours of Mexico and the rich, spice-laden soul of Jamaica, then look no further, Papi Chulo is your next must-visit hot spot!

From the moment you step in, the energy is electric: Vibrant colours, lively music, and an inviting atmosphere set the stage for a culinary fusion like no other. This isn’t just a meal; it’s a bold, mouthwatering journey that celebrates two of the world’s most flavourful cuisines.

The menu is a carefully crafted fusion of two rich culinary traditions: Tacos loaded with smoky, spiced meats-your choice of beef, shrimp, or chicken, wrapped in handmade tortillas that practically melt in your mouth. Craving something heartier? The burritos are packed with slow-cooked, flavour-rich goodness, while the plantain nachos strikes a perfect balance between sweet and savoury, offering an irresistible crunch in every bite. Each dish is a masterful balance of fresh Mexican salsas and the deep, authentic seasonings that make Jamaican cuisine legendary.

The magic doesn’t stop at the food. Let’s talk drinks! Papi Chulo’s cocktail menu is equally impressive, featuring innovative takes on classic drinks. The margaritas get a tropical twist with sorrel and mango, while the rum-kissed micheladas bring an island-inspired kick to this Mexican classic. Whether you’re a cocktail connoisseur or just looking for the perfect sip to complement your meal, the bar does not disappoint.

On my latest stop at Papi Chulo, I indulged in a fish bowl to start, followed by beef enchiladas and a shrimp taco that hit every flavour note just right. To top it off, I opted for an Amaretto Sour, because a little sweet-and-smooth balance never hurts. The best part was that this entire meal, drinks included, was under $10,000, an incredible value for such high-quality fare that was perfectly portioned for two.

According to restaurant principal Jemila Hamilton, Papi Chulo has been a massive hit since opening its doors at C4 Plaza, Drax Hall, St Ann. However, if you are exploring the heart of Ocho Rios, you can also stop by their branch at 170 Main Street, where they are serving up flavourful creations from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm on weekdays, and on weekends, they keep it going until midnight.

So, whether you are road-tripping across the island or stepping out of your hotel in search of something unique, Papi Chulo is where you want to be. Keep your eyes on this rising star, because this spot is heating up, and trust me, you don’t want to miss out!
