Risdon takes one-shot lead at Jamaica Open Golf Tourney
ROSE HALL, St James — Canadian Dustin Risdon will take a one-shot lead into today’s third and final round of the Half Moon Hotel-sponsored 49th Jamaica Open Golf tournament at the Half Moon course in Rose Hall after shooting a six under par 66 on yesterday’s second round for a two-round score of eight under par 136.
On another glorious day of sunshine and blue skies, the 31-year-old former Western New Mexico University representative carded seven birdies as three other players are within four shots of the lead going into today’s final round that is set to start at 7:30 am.
Jamaican-born, Florida-based player Peter Horrobin is a shot off the lead in second place on seven under par 137 after a two under par 70 yesterday, with first-round leader Russ Cochrane one shot further back after a level par 72 on the second day.
Half Moon professional Dermot Paul Warren is in fourth place on four under par 140 after his three under par 69 yesterday, and within striking distance of the leaders.
Meanwhile, American professional Gary Hallberg was disqualified at the start of play yesterday after he reportedly signed a scorecard with the wrong score on the first day.
Tournament Director David Mais told the Jamaica Observer that Hallberg had signed a scorecard for a two under par 70 score, but after turning in the card at the end of play, found out that instead of recording a bogey five on the 18th hole, he had signed a card that recorded a par four.
Mais said the player was regretful of the error and while he was not able to take further part in the tournament, has joined the staff as an official.
Also, after eight players went under par on Thursday only four managed the feat yesterday with Risdon leading the way with Trinidad and Tobago’s Simon Merry shooting a five under par 67 to be in fifth place overall on two under 142.
Merry played an unblemished round, shooting three birdies, on the eighth, ninth and 15th holes and an eagle on the par five 12th hole as he finished the front nine in two under par and the back nine in three under 33.
Meanwhile, Horrobin has sounded a warning that despite not matching his first day 67, if he plays as well as he did over the previous two rounds he will be hard to beat.
The Senior Professional carded three birdies, but also had a bogey on the par five 10th hole and told reporters “I am not satisfied, I putted real bad today but otherwise I hit the ball great.
“If I continue to hit the ball the way I am I can’t go over par,” he said.
Cochrane said after yesterday’s let down he will be more aggressive today, as he seeks back-to-back victories. “I did not putt as well as I did on Thursday and felt like I did not complete some holes and will try to attack the pins more tomorrow.”
Cochrane had two bogies on the front nine alone, the first and sixth holes to go with one birdie before playing the back nine at one under par 35.
This morning, Risdon, Horrobin and Cochrane will be in the final paring, set to go off at 11:20 am, just after the group including Warren, Merry and Jessie Smith.
