Earthquakes, Titans into JPL semi-finals
THE May Pen Earthquakes and the Spanish Town Titans secured semi-final places in the Jamaica Premier League Twenty20 cricket competition after Sunday’s final round of preliminary matches at Chedwin Park in St Catherine.
The semi-finals will see University Dynamites battling the Titans, while Half-Way-Tree Sparks — the league’s only unbeaten team — face May Pen Earthquakes. Both matches are scheduled for next Saturday at the Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium.
On Sunday, the opening game in Zone B between Kingston Hurricanes and Spanish Town Titans was not played due to a waterlogged field.
The no-result gave both teams one point each which left the Titans as runners-up in Zone B with five, while the Hurricanes (one point) were eliminated after suffering two losses previously.
The Half-Way-Tree Sparks (12 points) already booked their spot after beating and ultimately eliminating Ocho Rios Chargers (four points) at the Noranda Bauxite Sports Complex on Saturday.
In Sunday’s afternoon match at Chedwin Park, the May Pen Earthquakes (eight points) edged out Zone A rivals Mandeville Thunder (four points) by three runs in a match reduced to 10 overs per side. The win meant the Earthquakes finished second behind University Dynamites based on net run rate.
Batting first, Ordane Hutchinson struck 43 and Errol Thomas made 22 in May Pen’s 105-5.
In reply, national player Jamie Merchant top-scored with 43 but the Mandeville Thunder were dismissed for 102. Damion Grey grabbed 3-14 and was supported by national left-arm swing bowler Krishmar Santokie, who took 2-18.
Scores: May Pen Earthquakes 105-5 (10 overs); Mandeville Thunder 102 (10 overs)
The University Dynamites already booked their berth in the last four after defeating Zone A’s other team, MoBay Sixers, at Noranda Bauxite on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the final will be played on Sunday at the Trelawny stadium.
The teams are vying for the $700,000 winner’s prize, while the runners-up are set to pocket $500,000. The Man of the Tournament will walk away with $50,000.
