BUFF Bay High amassed a combined score of 629.50 points to capture the 2013 Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS)/Eastern Secondary Schools Sports Association (ESSSA) Athletics Championships title that ended at the National Stadium yesterday.

The Portlanders overcame a tough challenge from defending champions Oberlin High, who ended with a total of 572.50 points, followed by St Mary High on 529, Glengoffe High, 293.50, Titchfield High on 186, Seaforth High, 142.50, St Thomas Technical on 132.50, and Morant Bay High with 122 points as the top schools.

Winning coach Kevin Brown said he was pleased with the performance of his charges, as they were expected to be in a keen battle for championship honours from defending champions Oberlin.

“I was very confident of winning the Eastern Championships this time around, as the mistakes we made last year to lose to Oberlin by 2.5 points were corrected this time,” said Brown, who was winning the title for a second time, after triumphing in 2010.

Oberlin, however, were the girls’ champions with 361 points, followed Buff Bay on 332, St Mary High on 274.50 and Glengoffe with 163 points.

Buff Bay captured the boys’ team title with a total of 297.50 points, followed by St Mary High on 254.50, Oberlin on 211.50, Glengoffe with 130.50, and Titchfield with 107 points.

Records again went tumbling throughout yesterday’s final day with Michael Bentley of Seaforth High, the star of the day, capturing three gold medals. He first won the Class Three boys’ 100 metres final in a new record time of 11.45 seconds to erase the old mark of 11.68 set by Romar Foster in 2010.

Bentley returned later to win the Class Three boys’ 400m final in a time of 55.16 seconds, and added the 200m final in 23.48 seconds, just failing to beat the record of 23.47 seconds.

Jodean Williams of St Mary High was also very impressive as she captured he Class One girls’ sprint double — the 100m in a new record time of 11.73 seconds, breaking her 2012 mark of 12.01 seconds. She returned to easily win the 200m final in runaway fashion in a time of 23.98 seconds.

Other records fell in the Class Three girls’ 800m final where Shanique Masters of Tacky High won in a new time of 2:20.81 minutes to break the old mark of 2:21.49 set by Crystal Palmer in 2007.

Titanai Markland of St Mary High set a new record when she won the Class One girls’ 800m in a time of 2:16.59 minutes to shatter the previous best of 2:20.92, which she set in 2012. Markland’s second gold came in the final of the Class One girls’ 400m final, winning in 55.21 seconds..

The girls’ 4x400m relay final was won by St Mary High in a new record time of 3:55.02, breaking the old mark of 3:56.44 minutes, which they set in 2012.

Shevon Bailey captured the Class One boys’ 100m final in 10.83 seconds, just outside the record of 10.80 set by Martin Ross in 1998. He returned to win the Class One boys’ 200m in 22.34 seconds.

Collin Sewell of Titchfield won the Class Two boys’ 100m in 11.19 seconds. Sewell also won the 200m in 22.75 seconds.

Shain Hyde of St Mary’s College won the Class Two girls’ 100m in 12.51 seconds, Olivia Levers of St Mary High won the Class Three girls’ 100m in 12.71 seconds, and the 200m in 26.05 seconds, while the Class Four girls’ 100m was won by Daneia Cousins of Buff Bay.

Kimara Francis of Robert Lightbourne High won the Class Four 200m in 27.23 seconds.

Lovell Evans of St Mary High won the Class Two girls’ 400m in 59.59 seconds and the 200m in 25.77 seconds with Trishauna Hemmings winning the Class Three girls’ 400m in 1:00.4.

Shawndain McLaren won the Class One boys’ 400m in 48.65 seconds, with the Class Two boys’ 400m won by Stephan Powell of Morant Bay High in 50.71 seconds.

St Thomas Technical won the boys’ 1,600 metres sprint medley in a time of 3:51.34 in a tight fight ahead of St Mary High (3:52.09), Buff Bay (3:53.20) and Glengoffe (3:53.31).
