A lack of adequate entries for the girls’ hurdles preliminaries in Classes one, two and three saw the postponement of these events yesterday, and organisers revealed they will resume at the semi-final stage on Friday.

That reduced the girls’ activities on the opening day of the ISSA/Grace-Kennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships to just four events.

On the track, only the heats of the Girls’ Class Four 70m hurdles took place with Edwin Allen’s Rackiel Gayle qualifying for the semi-finals with the fastest time of 11.22 seconds. Vere Technical’s Sanique Walker, who won heat four, was second fastest in 11.42 seconds.

Joda Campbell, the winner of heat three in 11.45 seconds and Holmwood Technical’s Shanette Allison with 11.74, complete the top four-fastest qualifiers.

Defending champions Edwin Allen have two qualifiers through, as do Hydel High, Vere Technical, St Andrew High and Wolmer’s Girls. Holmwood’s second runner Krista-Gaye Leslie finished fifth in her heat with a time of 12.03 seconds and failed to advance. Meanwhile, Jamaica’s World Juniors representative Tara Sue Barnett of Edwin Allen, threw 46.64m to lead all qualifiers in the final of the Class One discus after winning Flight One.

Barnett’s main challenger, Gleneve Grange of Holmwood Technical, threw 44.91m in topping Flight Two of the event.

In the girls’ Class One high jump, all the top schools saw their two competitors through to the next round after clearing the qualifying height of 1.50m.

Edwin Allen’s pair of Shanika Bryan and Rashema Briscoe; Holmwood’s Shanice Marshall and Anna-Kay Vaughn; Tamoya Walters and Tatiana Wolfe of St Jago; St Andrew High’s Chennel Palmer and Michellace Walker, along with the Convent of Mercy Academy — Alpha’s Krista-Gay Taylor and Shenelle McKay are all through to the next round.

Edwin Allen’s Rochelle Frazer, with a massive heave of 14.52m, led the Class Two shot put qualifiers ahead of Kiona Bradshaw of Vere with 12.81m. Isheka Binns, of Manchester High, was third best with 12.42m, the same as Tia-Gay Johnson, of Spalding High. Edwin Allen’s Janell Fullerton was fifth best with 12.27m, ahead of the St Andrew High pair of Venique Harris and Ayesha Champagnie, with 12.20m and 12.17m, respectively.

There will be three finals on today’s second day with the Class One discus set for 5:05 pm followed by the Class Two shot put at 5:30 pm. Then at 9:25 pm the girls’ 2,000m steeplechase Open will conclude the day’s event.

A total of 17 girls’ events are scheduled for day two with the Class Four long jump kicking off proceedings at 8:30 am, along with the Class One shot put preliminaries.
