HARBOUR View wrapped up the 2012/2013 Red Stripe Premier League title with two games remaining following their 2-0 win over Boys’ Town yesterday at Collie Smith Drive.

In-form striker Jermie Lynch netted in the 16th and 50th minutes for his fourth and fifth goals in three games, as Harbour View raced to an unassailable 69 points, 10 points more than second-placed Waterhouse, who have three games to play, including today’s against Tivoli Gardens at Drewsland.

Boys’ Town, arch-rivals of Harbour View for decades, actually gifted the ‘Stars of the East’ the title on a platter with two soft goals.

First, defender Carlos Wright’s poor back pass was latched onto by Brian Brown, who rounded goalkeeper Kirk Porter and provided Lynch with the easiest of tap-ins.

Then the usually dependable Daemion Benjamin fouled Jermaine Hue in the box for Lynch to easily convert from the penalty spot to give Harbour View victory and the title.

The Harbour View FC, formed in 1974, was securing their fourth title in the last 13 years, following triumphs in 1998/1999, 2006/2007 and 2009/2010.

Vinimore ‘Vin’ Blaine, who is a founding member, now has the rare distinction of coaching Harbour View’s female and male senior teams to premier league titles.

“I am one of the founders of the club…I managed the team for about three years and today to win it as a coach is rewarding for me,” said Blaine.

“I am very satisfied. We stuttered towards the end, but a little luck went our way because Boys’ Town had a few chances to come close and they didn’t,” he added.

“Today’s win is really a rewarding one seeing that we didn’t win seven games on a trot. Jermie Lynch came in and he made the difference for us in the last two games. He came back at the right time and gave us some positive results.”

At the final whistle, the expected wild celebration never materialised and Harbour View went about their business in a muted, but happy way.

“We have a lot of respect for Boys’ Town and it so happened that we had to play Boys’ Town to get the championship. So it’s not a thing that we are going to jump up and down in their faces. I spoke to them (players) before the game that we wanted to win with some class, and that’s what they did today,” said Blaine, who is the current national head coach of the Reggae Girls team.

“The only celebration will come at home, so there was no need to show off on Boys’ Town,” he added.

Meanwhile, Boys’ Town’s coach Andrew Price was disappointed with his team’s display, especially since they are preparing for the Caribbean Club Championship.

“I am disappointed, not that Harbour View won, but with the display that we gave today. I think we are a much better team and the goals that Harbour View scored we actually gave them. A defensive error in the first half and in the second half we gave up a penalty, so we gifted them the title on a platter,” noted Price.

“We wanted to look at the shape and players for the upcoming championship, but I didn’t think we showed enough intensity today and neither did Harbour View, but I believe they are deserving champions. They were the most consistent team throughout the entire season,” said Price.

In other games yesterday, Highgate avoided relegation with a 1-0 win over Sporting Central Academy, but are still in the danger zone after Humble Lion whipped Montego Bay United 3-1.

Highgate remained in 11th spot on 38 points and are five behind both Humble Lion and Sporting Central on 43 points each. So it’s now a three-team dogfight with two matches remaining.

Highgate are scheduled to play the already relegated Savannah, while Sporting Central and Humble Lion will clash on the penultimate day, setting the stage for a most intriguing battle to the end.

At the Frome Sports Complex, Savannah and Cavalier drew 1-1 in a game of academic interest.
