Retired educator calls for better parenting
MONTEGO BAY, St James – FORMER principal of the Albion Primary and Junior High School in St James, Lenoval O’Brien Morle, is calling for laws to be enacted that will encourage parents to raise their children to become responsible adults.
“Parents must through legislation be compelled to actively contribute in all aspects of their children’s development,” urged Morle.
Morle was addressing a large audience who turned out for a retirement function held in his honour last week Thursday, at the West Jamaica Conference Centre in Mount Salem, St James.
During his remarks, he listed a raft of ills in the education system, while at the same time making suggestions on how to improve the system.
“A number of students have serious challenges where learning is concerned, and yet without the requisite diagnostic investigation and appropriate intervention, our teachers are being pressured to deliver 100 per cent literacy. It is unfair, it is unfair! What is even worse is that everyone wants schools to correct the ills of the society,” he argued.
Morle retired last month as principal of Albion Primary and Junior High School, where he served for 36 years in various capacities.
The large number of dignitaries at the function included Member of Parliament for Central St James, Lloyd B Smith and Member of Parliament for North West St James, Dr Horace Chang. Also in attendance were representatives from the Ministry of Education Region Four, the Jamaica Teachers’ Association, Association of Principals and Vice- Principals and the Retired Teachers Association.
