UWI confirms Shirley’s secondment to Port Authority
UNIVERSITY of the West Indies (UWI) Professor Gordon Shirley is headed to the Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ), the institution said yesterday, confirming a story that was carried in the Business Observer.
In a press release, UWI said Prof Shirley will be seconded to the Government of Jamaica to serve as head of the PAJ for three years. His new assignment takes effect at the end of September.
“The UWI sees this as firm recognition of Professor Shirley’s exceptional leadership skills and as an opportunity for him to take the excellent national service that he already provides in numerous capacities to another level.
In a statement yesterday, UWI Vice-Chancellor E Nigel Harris said Shirley’s assignment “will leave a significant gap at the UWI as it is not only the Mona Campus that benefits from his wise counsel, incisive interventions and problem-solving skills, but the entire leadership of the university”.
He said that the university is actively considering a “suitable replacement”.
