More than a widow’s mite
Although many could not run around and play the gleeful shouts and laughter from the children at Widow’s Mite in Murray Mount, St Ann it was an indication that they were enjoying the fun day which was recently hosted by telecommunications company, Digicel.
“This is part of what we call Extraordinary Moments,” an excited Sandra Ledgister, sponsorship executive at Digicel, told the Jamaica Observer North East.
She explained that the fun day was a part of Digicel’s initiative to give back to the community. Widow’s Mite is also a part of Mustard Seed Communities with which Digicel shares a relationship, she said.
The Extraordinary Moments project started in January with Digicel undertaking several public initiatives such as paying school fees and bus fares for passengers travelling on public transport and buying roses for females on Valentine’s Day.
“Since then, it has grown by leaps and bounds and we have found it in our hearts that we can go out and we can do what we call extraordinary moments with the people in our community giving back,” she added.
The children were treated to cake and ice cream, popcorn and other delights while a clown kept them entertained throughout the day.
“We just want to leave them with the feeling that somebody came in and shared the day with them and left memories,” Ledgister said.
The children were also presented with giftsfrom the 14 Digicel volunteers who participated in the treat. In addition, the group also acted out the story of Little Red Riding Hood, much to the delight of the young ones.
Ledgister said the experience is a great one for the volunteers who represented various departments in the company.
“It’s one that is going to stay with us. It is not something we do just because we can, but because it feels good doing it,” she told the Observer North East.
