LIME claims 20,000 two-day haul
LIME says that it gained 20,000 new subscribers in two days during the promotion of its new rate of $2.99 per minute charged by the company to all networks local and international.
The promotion on Friday and Saturday, after Thursday’s announcement of the new rates, included the company giving away a new Alcatel 296 phone free of charge with the purchase of $1,000 credit.
“We gave the consumer just real, real value,” said Head of Retail at LIME, Stephen Price, in a press release.
“Its hard time and people realize value when they see it,” he added.
Last year, emergency legislation reduced the wholesale cross net rate to $5.00 per minute, while allowing the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) to employ standard international analysis to reduce the rate further to the $1.10 per minute announced earlier this month.
“With the low rate of $2.99 per minute, we have transferred much of the OUR value to the consumers,” Price said, explaining that previously, LIME charged $6.99 per minute to call across networks.
“But going down to as low as $2.99 was a bold move on our part, especially since we also gave away free phones to consumers with purchases of $1,000 credit,” the LIME executive said.
According to LIME, several of its outlets had run out of phones within seven hours after opening on the first day of the promotion.
