St Francis pip Torrington for INSPORTS Basic Schools Champs

ST FRANCIS Infant with a combined total of 142 points captured the 2013 Institute of Sports (INSPORTS) Basic School Athletics Championships which ended at the National Stadium last Friday.

It was not until the final event, the boys’ 4×100 metres open that determined the overall winner in the combined boys’ and girls’ scores. St Francis clinched the championships by winning the boys’ 4x100m relay open in 1:10.12 minutes, ahead of Herrick seconds 1:11.38, and Torrington Early Childhood third in 1:11.51.

In an exciting three-day championships, Torrington, who led for the first two days had an interesting three-way battle with St Francis and defending champions Citizen’s Advice Bureau/RJR with the lead changing between the schools.

After 24 events, Torrington led with 128 points, followed by Citizen’s Advice Bureau/RJR on 127 and St Francis on 125 points with the girls’ and boys’ 4x100m relays to decide the winner.

With the boys’ 4x100m relay left, Torrington were ahead on 133 points, St Francis on 130 and Citizen’s Advice Bureau on 129 points.

The boys’ 4x100m relay open was a time final involving six heats with the fastest time declared the winner which was won by St Francis to clinch the championships title.

Second in the overall points standings was Torrington with 141 points, followed by Citizen’s Advice Bureau/RJR on 134, Alpha Infant on 73, Elim Early Childhood with 66, Ascot Basic with 63, Jahmona Early Childhood on 41, Knollis Basic on 36, Kid’s Choice and Herrick Basic School with 33 points the leading schools.

Sasha-Shunta Hemmings of Ascot won the Class One girls’ 80-metre final in 12.92 seconds with the Class One boys’ 80m final won by Ehinome Ehikametalor of Covenant Christian Academy in 12.28 seconds.

The Class Two boys’ 60m final was won by Requelme Reid of Bethany Basic in 10.12 seconds, with the Class Two girls’ 60m final won by Anejah Gordon of Citizen’s Advice Bureau/RJR in 10.30 seconds.

Romario Lewis of Torrington won the Class Three boys’ 30m final in 6.33 seconds with the Class Two girls’ 30m final won by Grace-Ann Bailey of Alpha Infant in 6.75 seconds.

Ehikametalor of Covenant Christian Academy won the boys’ 50m hurdles open in 9.70 seconds ahead of Lawrone Freemantle of Villa Park (10.12), and Karl Graham of St Francis in 10.12 seconds.

The girls’ 50m hurdles open was won by Brittany Henry of Torrington in 10.35 seconds ahead of Joradine Francis of Amy Bailey (10.50), and Shevi-Anne Shim of Bethany in 10.53 seconds.

Meanwhile, Herrick captured the Class One boys’ 4x50m relay in 35.02 seconds ahead of Torrintgon (35.46) and St Francis (35.50 seconds). St Francis won the Class One girls’ 4x50m relay in 35.97 seconds ahead of Torrington (36.47) and Elim in 36.59 seconds.

Alpha Infant won the Class Two girls’ 4x50m relay in 38.30 seconds from Citizen’s Advice Bureau/RJR (38.95), and Torrington in 39.88 seconds, while the Class Two boys’ 4x50m relay was won by Citizen’s Advice Bureau/RJR in 38.08 seconds ahead of Ascot in 38.65, and Harvest Temple in 39.68 seconds.

The Class Three boys’ 4x50m relay was won by Alpha Infant in 44.62 seconds ahead of Citizen’s Advice Bureau/RJR in 44.96, and Jahmona (45.56 seconds), while Citizen’s Advice Bureau/RJR won the Class Three girls’ 4x50m relay in 43.35 seconds ahead of Jahmona in 43.80 and Elim in 45.33 seconds.
