Locke, Wood top Western Primary athletes
CATHERINE HALL, St James — ENFIELD Primary’s Omarr Locke and Petersfield Primary’s Aaliyah Wood were the Boys and Girls Champion Athletes respectively at Saturday’s fifth staging of he JPS Western Primary Schools Track and Field Championships held at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.
Locke totalled 24 points in the boy’s Class 3, while Wood scored 23 points in the girls Class 2, winning their respective class championships.
Howard Cooke Primary were crowned overall champions with 201 combined points, 20 more than two-time defending champions Wakefield Primary, 181; followed by former champions Corinaldi Avenue Primary, 174; Enfield Primary — 163, and Barracks Road Primary 151, rounding out the top five schools.
Eighteen schools scored points at the meet that also saw 12 records being broken, five coming in the relays.
Locke won two events, the ball throw and the 200m, while placing third in the 100m to beat Sav Primary’s Gavan Bantin, who scored 16 points, and Devontae Heywood of Wakefield, who scored 13 points in Class 3.
Wood had won in the 200m, while taking second place in two events, the long jumps and 100m, as she finished ahead of Ocho Rios’ Akelia Hylton, who scored 18 points and Nia Robinson of Barracks Road, who scored 16 points.
Carletta Bernard of Howard Cooke Primary and Ocho Rios Primary’s Bronx Walters both scored 18 points each to win the girls and boys Class 4 titles respectively.
Howard Cooke’s Jaymarie Spence was the girls class 3 champion with 14 points, while Granville Primary’s Andre Bent won the Class 2 boys title with 18 points.
Barracks Road’s Shantae Simpson won the Class 1 girl’s title with 18 points, two more than Howard Cooke’s Sashaia Sailsman, while Ocho Rios’ Zwandi Harrison was third with 13.
Torea Franklyn of Corinaldi Avenue Primary scored 20 points to top the Class 1 boys with Rushane Fullerton of Granville Primary next with 18 followed by Barracks Road’s Tyrique Beswick with 18 points.
