Catherine Hall, Hoopers have it all to play for
MONTEGO BAY , St James — SUNDAY’S rescheduled third round clash between two-time defending champions Catherine Hall All-Stars and beaten mid-season finalists Hoopers at the Montego Bay Cricket Club could decide which team will join Granville Jaguars in next week’s finals of the Flow National Basketball League-West.
The game, the final in the regular season, has taken on a winner-take-all flavour with the teams in a virtual dead heat, both on 22 points, but while Catherine Hall have one game to play, Hoopers have two, including one Saturday against Granville, also at Cricket Club.
The team that comes out on the wrong side of this weekend’s games will get the consolation prize of a trip to the national play-offs as the third place team.
Granville secured their place last weekend after back-to-back wins over MBCC Knights and Lucea Flames as MVP front-runner Leroy Lawrence dominated both games to put his team in the front row for their first league title.
The wins took Granville to 25 points with a game in hand. They cannot finish lower than second place even if they lose to Hoopers on Saturday.
Granville and Hoopers have shared regular season wins so far this season but Granville have the edge after winning the mid-season finals.
Hoopers and Catherine Hall have also beaten each other in the regular season this season, and Sunday’s winner will get the berth in the finals set for Wednesday at the Cricket Club, starting at 7:00 pm.
On Saturday, Lawrence and Dave Black scored 18 points each as Granville recovered from a first quarter 16-21 deficit to run away from Knights who were led by Jhaun Bryan’s 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Jaguars led 43-21 at half time and 65-49 going into the fourth quarter.
On Sunday, Lawrence had a ‘monster’ game scoring 39 points and grabbing 26 rebounds along with six blocked shots, six steals and six assists as Black scored 24 points, had six rebounds, six assists and four steals.
Craig Dorman tried to keep Lucea in the game with 30 points and 11 rebounds while Julian Walker scored 23 points and had nine rebounds.
Lucea lost back-to-back games after being beaten 70-58 by Hoopers on Saturday, despite a game high 20 points from Walker and 15 points and 13 rebounds from Dorman.
In Sunday’s second game Catherine Hall beat winless Railway Tigers 66-50 to stay in the race as Vaughn Corke and Ricardo Brooks both scored 14 points.
