Great ban on public smoking, …but what about open burning?
DearEditor,
The Jamaica Environ-ment Trust (JET) congratulates the Minister of Health Dr Fenton Ferguson on the ban on smoking in public places and hopes he will now be similarly energetic with regard to stemming open burning.
Over many years, JET has tried to engage the Ministry of Health to curtail this harmful practice, which is a breach of the Public Health Act nuisance regulations, without success.
Open burning is also a major threat to respiratory health and it is ubiquitous in Jamaica.
We look forward to the minister’s insistence that his ministry begin to enforce its own laws in this regard.
