Jamaican connection in Liverpool’s win
LIVERPOOL, UK (CMC) – Daniel Sturridge celebrated his 24th birthday with an early goal for Liverpool and a 1-0 victory against champions Manchester United in the English Premier League on Sunday.
Sturridge, who has Jamaican roots, scored the only goal of the match in the third minute to give Liverpool a perfect start to the season and to the top of the standings after the third weekend of premier league football.
Substitute Jamaican Raheem Sterling also came close to scoring in the second half but was denied by Manchester United’s custodian, David De Gea.
Manchester United sits seventh in the standings with four points, behind Chelsea (second, seven points) followed by Manchester City, Arsenal, Stoke City and Tottenham Hotspurs with six points each.
Sturridge, whose grandparents are both Jamaicans, in July, launched the Sturridge Family Foundation in Portmore, Jamaica in the form of a family fun day.
