KC edge Spanish Town in drab affair
Kingston College (KC) edged a tired-looking Spanish Town High 1-0 in their ISSA/LIME Group F Manning Cup match at KC’s North Street ground yesterday.
Striker Kashane Jones scored the all-important goal by converting a deft pass from Chevaun Blake in minute 21 to dig KC out of a hole following their unexpected 1-0 loss to Greater Portmore on Saturday.
It was a very lacklustre game that showed signs of tired leg following a tough game for both teams on Saturday.
The Spanish Town forwards rarely threatened their hosts with their best efforts coming in about the 80th minute when goalkeeper Akim Larmand was called upon to tip a dipping shot from Maxwell Lindo over the crossbar.
Spanish Town had few half chances which they couldn’t quite accept as the fast moving KC defenders took advantage of the visitors’ heavy footedness and quickly nullified their efforts.
Coach Donovan Hayles was quite relieved with the win, but thought that coming off a loss on Saturday somewhat inhibited his players from getting more goals, especially in the second half when they were a bit cagey.
Nonetheless Hayles thought that “they handled the situation well and maintained possession of the ball and moved it around, but not to my liking. I would have liked to see the team move the ball around a little more to create openings with defence-splitting passes. However, I think this win should put us back in a confident mood and in our next games we can pick it up again,” said Hayles.
His counterpart Anthony Thompson said that he was very disappointed by the loss and could hazard a guess that the “players might not have recovered sufficiently from the tough game we played against Eltham winning 3-1. However, we are a determined group and will bounce back”.
