Wes Brown beats former world No 1 at Puerto Rico Classic
JAMAICAN golfing pro Wesley Brown was in scintillating form — carding a four under par 68, and jumping 19 places to finish on five under, and 25th overall and ahead of former world number one David Duvall — in Sunday’s final round of the prestigious Puerto Rico Classic Golf Tournament.
It was presented by Merrill Lynch, and was played at East Course — Dorado Beach Resort, Puerto Rico.
The tournament is part of the Latino Tour and is organised by the United States Professional Golf Association and offers over US$150,000 in prize money.
Brown, who is sponsored by Sandals Resorts International, started the day on one under par 143 over two rounds, and proceeded to register one of his best rounds since turning professional a few months ago.
He eagled the second and birdied the sixth, seventh, 13th and 18th holes, but registered bogeys on the 12th to close on 68 for a three-day score of 211.
Former world number one David Duvall was one stroke back on 212 after shooting an even par 72 on the final day. The second day of the tournament was washed out by the inclement weather.
“I am very proud of myself,” Brown noted after his imperious performance. “The weather had been bad the previous day when I shot even par, so I came out today determined to make up ground.”
Brown said the hard work over the previous months was beginning to pay off, and he is looking forward to better things to come in the months ahead.
“I just want to say thanks to my sponsors, Sandals, and all the people back home in Jamaica who believe in me. I will continue to do my country proud,” the golfer said.
American Ryan Sullivan fired a seven-under 65 to come from behind and win the Puerto Rico Classic by one shot.
Sullivan finished at 11 under par 205. This was Sullivan’s first win on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica, and it came in his first tour start.
Samuel Del Val (68) and Armando Favela (70) shared second place at minus-10. Del Val birdied 16th and 17th to gain a piece of the lead, but stumbled to a bogey at the last to end one back. Favela birdied the last to share second.
Brown had received an invitation to the event based on his outstanding performance in the recently concluded National Golf Association Pro Golf Tour, which is the number three Men’s Professional Golf Tour in the United States after the PGA Tour and Web.com Tour, and is the number one recommended developmental tour by more PGA Tour and Web.com Tour Professionals.
