Jamaica’s WBC champ defends title in Mexico today
KINGSTON, Jamaica (CMC) — Jamaica’s Alicia Ashley, the World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight champion, will defend her title in Tijuana Mexico, against Mexico’s Zenny Sotomayer today.
The fight will be the third title defence for Ashley following victories over Maria Elena Villalobos last year and Panama’s Chanttal Martinez earlier this year.
Her reign began in July 2011 after she defeated Christina Ruiz in New York, to take home the vacant title.
Ashley’s opponent Sotomayer has a 10-5-1 record, and her last fight was an unsuccessful bid to win the International Boxing Federation (IBF) super bantamweight title, losing to the champion Kitty Wilson Castillo.
“I am ready to go,” said Ashley, known for being ring savvy and who has a 19-9-1 record.
“I hope that my opponent is, too, as I would like it to be a good fight.”
