Celebrities, execs, guild members face off at football
SEEING dancehall artistes, politicians, and business executives on a football field, all clad in football gear could only mean one thing, it’s that time of year for the Sagicor UWI Guild Celebrity Football Match.
This event puts together a team of celebrities and public officials to play against the team of organisers from the UWI Mona Guild and Sagicor, all for bragging rights.
This year’s celebrity team included dancehall artistes Laden, Twins of Twins, T’Nez, and minister of state in the Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment, Damion Crawford — who is also a former president of the UWI Mona Guild.
The opposing team, the team of organisers, included, Guild Games Committee Chairperson Estephan Fearon, Faculty of Medical Sciences representative Doneilo Thomas and Sagicor Brand Manager Barrington Groves.
Once the match got underway the spectators were thoroughly entertained — especially because within the first five minutes of the game a goal was scored on Damion Crawford, who was serving goalkeeper for his team. The celebrity team, however, quickly equalised. The match ended 3-1 in favour of the organisers, who retained their title.
While the celebrity match was thoroughly entertaining, it was the mere tip of the iceberg of what was to come in the Finals of the Sagicor UWI Guild Champions League competition.
This competition allows various blocks from the halls of residence at UWI to compete for the grand prize of $100,000.
The finals saw two blocks from Taylor Hall battling it out; Roosters (Block C) and the defending champions Attica Fraternity. Horns, whistles, drums, and chanting were the order of the evening as the supporters came out in their numbers to cheer on their team.
The level of skill and teamwork displayed on the field was second to none. After battling it out for 90 minutes The Fraternity of Attica won 2-1 and claimed the Champion’s league grand prize for the third time.
The UWI Guild Culture and Entertainment Affairs Chairperson Miguel Reid says the competition is just another way of bringing the student population together through entertainment as sports and entertainment are a good mix.
