Used-car show gets positive feedback

ENCOURAGED by the success of last weekend’s two-day Auto Show held at the Police Officers’ Club in St Andrew, the Jamaica Used Car Dealers Association (JUCDA) said a Montego Bay staging could be in the works.

“We are looking at the possibility of hosting another show in Montego Bay. It is not definitive, but we are tentatively looking at having a show in the second city in February of next year or maybe later during that year,” Lynvalle Hamilton, JUCDA president told Auto.

Hamilton, who is principal for Auto Channel, said the feedback from dealers and customers to last weekend’s show was a positive one.

“It was unbelievable. Normally, at a show, there are two or three on-the-spot sales. However, at this show, the patrons who came were serious and they responded positively. Over the two days we had over 50 deposits on the spot and over 500 prospects,” he said.

National Commercial Bank (NCB) and its affiliate Advantage General Insurance were also on hand to provide support.

Hamilton said the innovative on-site auctions went down well with guests who were attending the event.

“A 2004 Honda Stream was auctioned for $600,000. A ’08 Toyota Passo and a ’07 Mazda Demio went for $700,000 each. These would normally be in the $800,000 and $900,000 range, respectively.”

Tariq Malik, MD of Carland and executive JUCDA board member, had high praises for the auto show.

“Even though it was a last-minute plan to stage the event, it came off very well and was very great for us. The standard was higher than all used-car shows before,” he said.

At the show, Malik gave out 270 certificates which would entitle each holder to $100,000 discount on any vehicle on his lot.

“This would be deducted from the already discounted prices of the units,” he said. He said the offer would last until December 31.

Hamilton said the used-car dealers who were on show lived up to their promises.

“We promised the consumers that we’re giving back, and we lived up to our word,” he said.

The dealers on show were Auto Channel, Auto Impression, ATL Automotive pre-owned car division, Carland, CarMax, Crystal Vehicle Sales, GK Motors, Jetcon, Progressive Motors, O’Brien’s International, Path Transport, and Millennium Industries Ltd.
