HE is no longer a secret weapon. Akeem Bloomfield’s name has been all over the Internet chat forums of late and although Kingston College’s officials tried to downplay his potential, he announced himself in no mean order at the Pure Water Jamaica College Track and Field Invitational meet yesterday.

The lanky youngster, standing at 6ft 3ins, was hand-timed at 10.5 seconds for the Class II 100m, as he easily glided away from his opponents with his gazelle-like strides.

Bloomfield was just outside the 10.4-sec record held by Deshaun Jackson of Jamaica College (JC) since 2011, and had he not dipped early and apparently jumped over an obstacle on the track, the record could have been history.

Meanwhile, up to press time, two records were broken at the 21st staging of the meet in which Wayne Robinson was honoured for his outstanding leadership and contribution to education.

Former Calabar High standout Chad Wright erased the men’s discus throw Open of 58.26m with 61.54m. Frederick Dacres and Javaughn Shaw, who were second and third, respectively, also surpassed the previous record with 61.30m and 60.16m.

The other record of the day belonged to Calabar’s Dejour Russell, who leapt to 6.25m to win the Class Three long jump, erasing the old mark of 6.15m done by JC’s Johni James last year.

In other results which are time finals on a day in which the organisers were over an hour behind schedule, Britney Dixon of Vere Technical won the 3,000m Open in 10:58.84 minutes, just ahead of her teammate Sasha-Gaye Whyte in 10:58.86.

Mavis Bank High’s Garfield Gordon took the boys’ 5,000m in 16:08.91 minutes, well ahead of the KC pair of Romario Foote and Shane Buchanan, who did 16:16.63 and 16:33.03 minutes, respectively.

Basil Bingham showed that Calabar High’s strength in the throws remains healthy with the departure of Dacres, winning the Class One discus with a throw of 56.24m. His teammate Andre Beckford was third with 50.14m. JC’s Alec-Vern Longmore was second with 54.84m.

Christopher Brown of Calabar won the Class One shot put with a heave of 16.03m with his teammate Stefan McDonald second with 15.57m. JC’s Longmore was third with 15.44m.

JC swept the boys’ long jump with Pakito Dudley capturing the Class Two event with a leap of 6.42m ahead of his teammate Johni James with 6.39m. Ajani James won the Class One event with 7.23m with Michane Ricketts of Edwin Allen second with 7.15m. JC’s Clayton Brown was third with 6.97m.

Edwin Allen dominated the girls’ field events with Rochelle Frazer capturing the Class One discus with 48.84m, well clear of Ardenne’s Venique Harris with 46.88, and Tasha Crosse of Edwin Allen third with 44.99m.

Abigale Mullings continued Edwin Allen’s dominance, winning the Class Four high jump with 1.50m, with her teammate Janique Burgher third with 1.45m. St Jago’s Dana Thomas was second, also with 1.50m.

Hydel’s Shiann Salmon won the Class Three high jump with 1.6m ahead Shania Ingram of Edwin Allen with 1.60m.

St Jago were not to be outdone and they got the quinela in the Class Two high jump with Tishanna Hickling (1.65m) and Athaliah (1.55m) first and second, respectively. Holmwood’s Brianna Thomas was third with 1.55m.
