Phenomenal finish at Training Camp 5K
THE third staging of Training Camp annual 5K Road Race and walk promised to be a phenomenal event and delivered nothing less.
This road race was enjoyed by participants who came to Walk for the Fun! Walk for the exercise! or run for a better time.
There were definitely rising stars in this 5K, as the expected winners for the year of 2013 came across competition. In first place for the male category of run was Dwayne Graham with a time of 15.35 minutes. Following him in second and third places were students of the St Jago High School, Cavhan McKenzie, and Larone Haye, with times of 16.38 and 16.40 minutes, respectively.
The winner of the 2012 Training Camp 5K for the female category, Arieta Martin, relinquished her title by placing third with a time of 20.13 minutes. Monifa Green of the Hydel High School rose to the occasion and finished in first place with a winning time of 19.36 minutes, followed by her teammate Emily Cole, who had a time of 20.2 minutes. All winners in the three run categories won tickets from Delta Airlines to North America or the Caribbean.
The overall men’s walk winner was Michael Lee in a time of 30.22 minutes, just edging Jahveney Edwards in a time of 30.23 minutes.
Both received new smart phones from Digicel, while third place went to Vivian Lawes of Wolfpack.
In the women’s section, Paula Sinclair of Ageless Wonders won ahead of Jheanealle Gore and Paula Cross. The top two overall finishers of the men’s and women’s category for the walk were rewarded with Digicel DL Smart Phones.
St Jago emerged the team champion for the third consecutive year. These victors took the top five finishes for the event and won a ticket courtesy of Caribbean Airlines. The top corporate team was the Combined Marital Arts team, which also included the Olympian Kenneth Edwards, winner of the inaugural event in 2012, who won the Manor Park Trophy and bragging rights.
Olympian Hansle Parchment acted as starter for the event and Dr Neil Gardner was on hand to give participants warmed up and warmed down with Kharell Jones from Jamfit.
Due to injury, several of the seasoned middle-distance competitors who had registered were not able to compete, including Sean Pitter and Kirk Brown. An injured Andrew Gutzmore made a gallant attempt to compete, but was unable to finish the route.
